"Twiggy is a crack up,"
"Our chimps--we're looking to send them out to other facilities,"
"So right now, species around the world are taking a tailspin for extinction. So, we are taking a look at numbers when spaces open up or when our senior chimps pass on what we want to do with these programs,"
The San Francisco Zoo is placing its chimpanzee program on hiatus, marking the first time in its 96-year history without chimpanzees. Three chimpanzees—Gombus, Michael, and Twiggy—have lived at the zoo since 2019 and will be relocated to other facilities. Twiggy will join a troop at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and Michael and Gombus will move together when a suitable home is found. Recent deaths of several senior chimpanzees and global conservation concerns prompted the change. The exhibit will close temporarily and is expected to return in 5 to 10 years as an expanded, multi-generational habitat, enabling focus on other great apes.
