Rachael Sirianni, a pediatric brain cancer researcher at the University of Massachusetts T. H. Chan School of Medicine, reports her lab has mostly halted after massive cuts to the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. A backlog of manuscripts faces journals that charge thousands for immediate open access. The 2024 Public Access Policy requires federally funded researchers to deposit accepted manuscripts into repositories like PubMed Central immediately upon acceptance. Several major publishers are charging article processing fees from roughly $2,000 to over $10,000. Limited and uncertain grant funding makes covering those fees often untenable for affected researchers.
