The solution to UK climate crisis? Scientists to turn CO2 to STONE
"Scientists have identified eight potential sites for the 'direct air capture machines' (DAC), which would extract CO2 from the air and turn it to stone. The eight promising locations include Antrim in Northern Ireland, Borrowdale in the Lake District and the Isle of Mull in Scotland. According to the experts, the sites have a wealth of volcanic rock underground that would react with CO2 and turn the greenhouse gas into a solid form."
"In all, eight made the final selection due to their suitability, with Antrim Plateau basalts in Northern Ireland at the very top of the list. Mid-range estimates found that the Antrim Plateau offered the largest storage potential of 1,400 million tonnes of CO2. Next were Borrowdale in the Lake District and Skye Lava Group in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, estimated to offer 700 million tonnes and 600 million tonnes of storage, respectively."
Eight UK locations with reactive volcanic rock were identified as suitable for direct air capture and in-situ CO2 mineralisation. The sites include Antrim Plateau basalts, Borrowdale and the Skye Lava Group, among others across northern Britain. Volcanic rocks at these sites react with captured CO2 to form stable carbonate minerals, permanently storing the greenhouse gas. Combined capacity of the eight locations exceeds three billion tonnes of CO2, roughly equivalent to 45 years of UK industrial emissions. The Antrim Plateau offers the largest mid-range estimate at 1,400 million tonnes, with Borrowdale and Skye estimated at 700 and 600 million tonnes respectively. Site selection followed analysis of geology, chemistry and reactive rock volume across 21 candidate locations.
