The US Department of Energy is working on new small modular reactors, including the trailer-sized eVinci and Radiant's Kaleidos units, to conduct microreactor experiments. These reactors, powered by designs no larger than a semi-truck trailer, produce 5 MW and 1.2 MW respectively, suitable for small, remote sites. The DoE views microreactors as potential sources of energy for remote locations, alternatives to diesel generators, and capable of operating for five years without refueling, marking a significant step in nuclear power's future in the US.
The eVinci is designed to only produce 5 megawatts, while the Kaleidos is limited to just 1.2 megawatts of electrical power output.
Microreactors are one step down from the small modular reactors proposed by startups. The NRC approved NuScale's original 50 MWe SMR design in February 2023.
