"Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland have analysed a whopping database of nearly eight billion words posted on social media. They found Americans use the f-word more frequently than Australians or Brits, but Australians are more creative in its use. Aussies tend to use more inventive variants such as f***ing, f****d, f****r, f***face', 'mother******', 'fark' and the Irish-derived 'feck'."
"For the study, the team examined a total of 7.8 billion words posted by 435,345 X users from the US, the UK and Australia between 2006 and 2023. They focused solely on the f-word as it's the most frequently-used swearword and one of the most 'obscene or derogatory' likely to cause offence 'in polite interaction'. Americans used 'f***' most frequently, followed by Brits, then Australians -despite the foul-mouthed reputation of people Down Under."
Data included 7.8 billion words posted by 435,345 X users from the US, the UK and Australia between 2006 and 2023. Americans used the standard 'f***' most frequently, followed by Brits, then Australians. Australians produced the largest number of distinct spelling variants and more inventive forms such as f***ing, f****d, f****r, f***face, mother******, fark and feck. The dataset contained over 2,300 different spellings of the f-word, with 2,160 Australian variants, 1,969 US variants and 1,474 UK variants. Australians showed lower raw frequency but higher creative variation in swearword spellings.
