PG&E sees huge data center demand in San Jose area as tech expands
Briefly

PG&E is experiencing a surge in requests for new data centers driven by big tech's increasing energy needs, primarily due to AI advancements. The utility is evaluating requests totaling 8.7 gigawatts in electricity consumption, which could decrease customer bills by 1-2% as fixed costs are shared among larger clients. Currently, PG&E is focused on 18 data center projects, amounting to 1.4 gigawatts, set to begin operations between 2026 and 2030. Efforts to upgrade its electricity system will support these tech developments, benefiting the broader community as well.
There are multiple benefits to this. For every gigawatt of new data center load, customer bills could decrease by 1% to 2% in the coming years.
We are really excited about this... If those fixed costs can be increasingly spread out over more mega customers, residential customers could see reduced bills.
These 18 data hubs are in the final engineering phase... expected to begin operations between 2026 and 2030.
PG&E is studying requests for new data centers that combined would require 8.7 gigawatts of electricity to operate.
