The VTA is in the early construction phases of a significant BART extension in Santa Clara County. This ambitious project, touted as the largest infrastructure undertaking in the area, will incorporate six miles of new rail and a five-mile tunnel with four new stations. Construction includes extensive work at the west portal, where crews are preparing to begin tunneling. Sound walls have been installed to reduce nighttime disruptions, allowing for continuous work. Federal funding of $5.1 billion has been allocated, but a funding gap remains, necessitating further financial solutions.
"The project is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Santa Clara County," VTA's chief megaprojects delivery officer Tom Maguire said.
"The walls go top-down," VTA's director of construction Sarah Wilson said. "The walls get completely installed before we excavate anything."
