Half Moon Bay: First manufactured homes arrive at new farmworker housing project
Briefly

San Mateo County has initiated the development of Stone Pine Cove, an affordable housing community for farmworkers, with the first three of 47 manufactured homes recently arriving. This project aims to provide permanent housing in light of past concerns, particularly following a mass shooting in Half Moon Bay that highlighted poor living conditions. The county has allocated a significant budget for this initiative, and eligible families can rent below-market homes, with the option for future purchase. The effort reflects a commitment to improve the living standards for agricultural workers and their families in the region.
We made a promise to honor the hands that feed us with dignity and safe shelter, San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller said in a statement.
The county committed $11.5 million last year for construction and an additional $6 million for the purchase and installation of the manufactured homes.
Qualified families will be able to rent the homes at below-market rates, with the option to purchase later through a state program for low-income farmworkers.
According to a 2024 report by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, between 1,300 and 1,600 farmworkers live in San Mateo County.
