San Jose city leaders have voted to rezone 10% of the Guadalupe Gardens land, aiming to encourage business development along Coleman Avenue. Existing business owners have expressed concern over homeless encampments in the area, which have been challenging to manage post-pandemic. Councilmember Michael Mulcahy highlighted that future businesses would complement a $24 million revitalization project for nearby Columbus Park. However, environmental advocates caution that the planned developments could significantly diminish local green spaces, contradicting goals in the cityâs General Plan.
The commercial activity will benefit the city (and) complete that side of the street, which is now a little difficult to drive by and look at.
The General Plan talks about the possibility for the city to purchase more of the land along Coleman Avenue to actually expand the park.
