Last week, extreme heat at the Arizona Hot Springs trail resulted in emergency rescues for 28 hikers, including children with special needs. High temperatures, reaching 100 degrees, surprised many, particularly as this is early in the spring season. Tragically, one hiker died from suspected heat-related causes just before the rescues occurred. Following the incidents, park officials closed the Arizona Hot Springs and Goldstrike Trails but later reopened other trails after conditions improved. Authorities urge hikers to prepare adequately, emphasizing hydration and nutrition during hikes under extreme heat.
Hiking experts suggest always planning ahead if you're planning to hike. Start your day well-hydrated, and bring extra water and salty snacks to replenish lost electrolytes.
The rescues prompted officials to close both the Arizona Hot Springs Trail and Goldstrike Trails. 'With the season's heat just beginning, most people are not yet acclimated, increasing the likelihood of heat illness,' said Lake Mead officials.
