"Malinin, known as the "Quad God," is part of a stacked United States figure skating team. While this may be his first Olympics, it's an event that is definitely in his blood: His parents, Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, previously skated in the Olympics for Uzbekistan. Malinin, who helped the U.S. win gold in the team event, has also notched a first-place showing after the men's singles short program. He's set to compete for a medal in the free skating final on Friday, Feb. 13."
""It's probably going to be only me and my dad who's going to go," Malinin told Craig in the interview, which published Feb. 13. "My mom is, she gets super nervous when I compete, and especially in Milan, that's going to be so much pressure for her. So she'll probably even just stay off the radar for a few days until after I'm done skating," Malinin said. "She gets that worked up?" Craig asked. "Yes. That happens to all the competition(s) I go to. My mom won't watch in person. She won't watch over TV. She waits for my dad to give her the phone call that (it's) finished, and then he tells her what happened. And then after a few days, that's when she goes and watches it," Malinin explained."
Ilia Malinin, nicknamed the "Quad God," skates for the United States and contributed to the U.S. team gold. He placed first after the men's singles short program and will compete in the free skating final on Feb. 13. Both parents are former Olympians for Uzbekistan and serve as his coaches; his father is in Milan while his mother remains behind because she becomes extremely nervous about watching his competitions in person or on TV. In 2024 he became the first skater to land the six types of quad jumps in a single program and expresses gratitude for following his parents' footsteps.
