'You couldn't meet a nicer guy' - US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk visits Ballinrobe Racecourse
Jim Furyk visited Ballinrobe racecourse in County Mayo, arriving by helicopter and spending the evening at McHale Race Day with an estimated 2,800 spectators. He traveled with JP McManus, who was visiting the racecourse for the first time since 1999. The pair had previously attended Limerick’s win over Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship at the Gaelic Grounds. Ballinrobe Racecourse manager John Flannelly said he learned about the visit only after being informed by the helicopter pilot earlier that day, and he prepared a landing space and welcomed them. Furyk and McManus were brought to a hospitality suite and enjoyed racing in sunny conditions. Furyk said he would make multiple trips to Adare Manor ahead of the Ryder Cup in September 2027.
"Mr Furyk arrived at Mayo's only racecourse via helicopter and spent the evening at the McHale Race Day alongside an estimated 2,800 spectators. Mr Furyk, who was accompanied by JP McManus, had been staying in Adare Manor when they flew to Ballinrobe racecourse before returning to Adare later that evening. The day previously, the pair attended Limerick's win over Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick."
"John Flannelly, Manager of Ballinrobe Racecourse, said he "didn't know anything" about their visit until the helicopter pilot informed them via telephone earlier that day. "We just made sure we had a landing space ready for the helicopter. I went out, and I welcomed them," Mr Flannelly told the Irish Independent. The pair were then brought to one of the racecourse's hospitality suites before enjoying an evening of racing that was blessed with glorious sunshine."
""You couldn't meet a nicer guy now," said Mr Flannelly of Mr Furyk, describing him as "an absolute gentleman" Mr McManus, who is a renowned racehorse owner, was visiting Ballinrobe Racecourse for the first time since 1999. "They were just lovely to meet and we were delighted to have them," said Mr Flannelly. "To have the Ryder Cup, USA Ryder Cup captain at your track like is something that's never happened before and probably will never happen again.""
"Speaking about his trip to Ireland, Mr Furyk said he would be making "a number of trips" to see the Adare Manor golf course ahead of the Ryder Cup in September 2027. Mr McManus's renowned golf course will host the competition, with the world's greatest golfers set to descend on the Limerick venue. Mr Furyk did a number of interviews during his visit to Ballinrobe."
