12-Year-Old Skier Dies After Getting Wedged in Avalanche Barrier in Austria - SnowBrains
"The avalanche occurred at around 1:00 p.m. in an off-piste area near the Goldbergbahn, between lift pillars seven and eight. The young boy was skiing with a friend of similar age when he triggered an avalanche. The avalanche pushed him into an avalanche barrier. Eyewitnesses immediately alerted emergency services, and rescue crews were on site instantly, including mountain rescue teams and an emergency medical helicopter."
"The avalanche was described by the police as approximately 50 meters (160 feet) wide. It is said to have carried the boy around 10 meters downhill and partially buried him under the snow. However, the boy was wedged between the snow and the avalanche barriers. Mountain rescuers from Bad Gastein, assisted by eyewitnesses and the crew of the Christophorus 7 rescue helicopter from East Tyrol, were able to locate and excavate the boy quickly."
On December 13 a 12-year-old Czech skier died after triggering an avalanche in an off-piste area at Sportgastein near the Goldbergbahn mid-station in Bad Gastein, Austria. The avalanche, about 50 meters wide, carried the boy roughly 10 meters downhill and partially buried him. He became wedged between the snow and avalanche barriers intended to protect resort-maintained slopes. Eyewitnesses and on-site mountain rescue teams, assisted by the Christophorus 7 rescue helicopter, located and excavated the boy quickly. Rescuers attempted resuscitation for about 20 minutes but the emergency doctor pronounced him dead at the scene. Salzburg prosecutors opened an investigation.
