Emma Aicher in a League of Her Own: German Star Wins Super-G in Soldeu, Andorra, by Nearly a Second - SnowBrains
"New Zealand's Alice Robinson, skiing in bib 8, delivered the first true challenge. The Giant Slalom specialist-who has quietly been rebuilding her confidence after a mid-season dip-attacked the steeps with conviction and skied the technical third sector nearly four tenths faster than anyone else to that point. She crossed the line 0.10 seconds ahead of Suter to seize the lead."
"At just 22 years old, Emma Aicher skied like a veteran chasing hardware. From the first split, the German was in a different league-fastest through the opening two sectors and building a commanding advantage over Robinson. She gave back a fraction of time in the technical section but carried relentless speed into the final pitch and across the line in 1:26.72."
"I knew that the top isn't my kind of course, it's very flat and glidey. I'm really proud of myself to get the most out of the sections I knew I could ski fast."
The women's speed tour downhill competition took place in Soldeu, Andorra on February 28 under overcast conditions on the Aliga course. Corinne Suter, the previous day's winner, set an early benchmark time of 1:27.70 that held through the first seven competitors. Alice Robinson from New Zealand challenged this lead by skiing the technical third sector significantly faster than previous starters, taking the lead by 0.10 seconds. Sofia Goggia, the Super-G globe leader, struggled to find rhythm on the Italian-set track. Emma Aicher, at 22 years old, delivered the decisive performance, skiing the fastest opening two sectors and maintaining commanding speed throughout to win with a time of 1:26.72, the only sub-1:27 time of the day, finishing 0.88 seconds ahead of Robinson.
