Grooming America's Only Indoor Ski Area
"Indoor ski resorts are popping up all over the world, serving as a site to ski and snowboard all year round no matter the outside temperatures. While their popularity is growing, there's still just one indoor area in the United States: Big SNOW American Dream in New Jersey. You might be curious what the maintenance of an indoor ski resort looks like, but it isn't all that different from an outside resort."
"According to Big SNOW slope maintenance supervisor Vincent Carrozza, who shared the video, the ski area recycles snow, purposely melting that which would never melt otherwise and replacing it weekly. New snow is made around 5 days a week. The groomer in the video is a Husky groomer with a smaller blade, tracks, and tiller, allowing the grooming crew to reach the area's smaller nooks and crannies."
Indoor ski resorts enable year-round skiing and snowboarding regardless of outside temperatures, with growing global popularity. Big SNOW American Dream in New Jersey is currently the only indoor ski area in the United States. Maintenance parallels outdoor resorts, with added focus on moving and remaking snow. The ski area recycles snow by melting snow that would not melt naturally and replacing it weekly, and produces new snow about five days per week. Grooming uses a Husky groomer with a smaller blade, tracks, and tiller to reach tight nooks and crannies. Big SNOW operates seven days a week with four trails, a park, and four lifts.
