Sister of Italian SkiMo Athlete Dies in Avalanche at Swiss-Italian Border - SnowBrains
"The slide killed a young ski instructor and a local mountaineer while on a backcountry tour in high-altitude terrain near Bormio on the Swiss-Italian border. A third member of the party survived unharmed. The victims were identified as Marika Mascherona, 28, and Alberto De Maron, 26."
"The avalanche struck at around 2,900 metres on the southwest side of Piz Tea Fondada/Monte Cornaccia, not far from the summit, and ran for more than 300 meters downslope. The Alpine Rescue, the Sondrio fire brigade and two rescue helicopters that took off from Sondrio and Bergamo intervened."
"Rescue operations involved around 15 technicians from the Bormio and Valfurva stations of the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS), alongside the Alpine Rescue unit of the Guardia di Finanza and local firefighters. Rescuers worked with transceivers, probes and avalanche dog units to rule out the presence of other people buried in the slide."
An avalanche on the southwest face of Piz Tea Fondada in Valdidentro, Valtellina, killed two people: Marika Mascherona, a 28-year-old ski instructor and former Europa Cup slalom skier, and Alberto De Maron, a 26-year-old mountaineer. The avalanche struck around 10:30 a.m. at approximately 2,900 meters elevation, traveling over 300 meters downslope. Emergency services deployed 15 rescue technicians from multiple Alpine rescue stations, two helicopters, and avalanche dogs. Despite extensive search efforts using transceivers and probes, both victims were found without signs of life. A third member of their ski touring party survived unharmed and required no hospitalization.
