Lucas Ribeiro Costa terminated his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 August and has referred his case to FIFA. He seeks to become the first player to benefit from Lassana Diarra's CJEU victory against FIFA. Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont represents Ribeiro and previously won the Bosman case and represents Diarra. The CJEU found that FIFA rules "impede the free movement of professional footballers wishing to develop their activity by going to work for a new club". Ribeiro alleges Qatar SC made an offer "well above the player's valuation" and that Sundowns "attempted to drive up the price...which made the deal impossible". Ribeiro's contract ran until 2028; he previously played for Charleroi and Beveren and scored a notable goal against Borussia Dortmund.
