FIFA is facing criticism for not adequately addressing the dangers posed by extreme heat, particularly with the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Environmental advocate Peter Crisp argued that the unsafe conditions during recent matches, such as the Club World Cup, were predictable based on historical weather patterns. Teams like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have already struggled to cope with high temperatures, resulting in mandated drink breaks and concerns over player performance. Coaches have commented on the difficulties and adapted conditions of gameplay, underscoring an urgent need for FIFA to proactively mitigate heat-related risks.
FIFA are "not taking the dangers of extreme heat seriously enough" and are on course for a "perfect storm" of unsafe conditions at major events.
This was a very obvious risk. It only took a brief look at the previous weather records from the cities involved to show that dangerous heat was absolutely going to impact this tournament.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said he was "sweating like I've just come out of a sauna" at the match and that it was "tough going for both teams".
Players not able to perform at their best due to extreme temperature conditions is a growing concern as climate issues begin to affect sports.
