England international Cole Palmer sustained a problem during the warm-up at the London Stadium and left the pre-game session early before disappearing down the tunnel. Chelsea confirmed shortly before kick-off that Palmer would not play and replaced him in the starting XI with Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian, who makes his first Premier League start. Manager Enzo Maresca said Palmer "felt something" and was omitted as a precaution. Pundit Jamie Redknapp described Palmer's absence as a boost for West Ham, who were seeking a response after a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland.
