Dest 'stronger' in USMNT return after torn ACL
"I was running on full speed, and then I just touched the ball and the foot where I landed with, I just kind of jumped in the air,' he said. 'I don't know what happened exactly, but it was bad. And to be honest, the first 15 seconds, I felt it, it was a lot of pain. But then after I was like, OK, this is something I felt before, so give me a couple of days and I'm back. But it wasn't like that.'"
""Obviously it was not good, but I learned from that," Dest said Friday. "I know that you need to be conscious about your temper. Obviously you need to help the team and that's not the way to help the team. So I've learned from that and I will make sure that these things won't happen again." Dest served a one-game suspension and missed the semifinal against Jamaica."
Sergiño Dest recovered from a torn ACL and will rejoin the United States national team after 1 1/2 years. He acknowledged losing his composure in November 2023 when he argued with a referee, received two yellow cards for dissent in 30 seconds, and served a one-game suspension. He returned for a March 24 win over Mexico before tearing his ACL during PSV training on April 20. He did not return to action until the following March 8 and played 90 minutes in PSV's May 18 season finale while continuing to rebuild confidence and sharpness.
