Eveliina Summanen joined Tottenham from Kristianstad in January 2022 and gradually adapted with club support and time to grow into the team. She received dedicated help on and off the pitch, which enabled steady development and continued ambition to progress. Summanen became a key midfield cog for Tottenham and won the Women's Super League goal of the month in November for a 40-yard winner against Aston Villa, also voted Tottenham fans' goal of the season. The 2024-25 season was difficult for Tottenham, finishing 11th, presenting a learning curve and motivation to work harder ahead. Limited time for reflection due to international commitments and preparing for the new season constrained detailed analysis of the poor league finish.
At Spurs I got enough support and time to kind of grow into things, Summanen says. I wasn't just thrown into the deep end right away. I got the right support, right help on and off the pitch to get to where I am now. It didn't just happen overnight, I just slowly, slowly kept building and that's still what I want to do, keep taking steps forward.
It's a good thing to keep in mind, getting goals and assists and to be part of that attacking game as well. But I'm not expecting the same kind of goal.
To be honest, I haven't had so much time to reflect on last season myself, because of the Euros and then having to switch on to preparing for the new season, Summanen says. But, obviously it didn't go as we wished for. That's just a learning curve for all of us in the club and in and around the team, just to remember that nothing comes for free in this league and you just need to work for it.
