Pope received a straight red for a deliberate handball against Liverpool, which resulted in a suspension that forced him to miss the 2023 final defeat to Manchester United. Replays showed Pope racing to a loose ball and momentarily sweeping it into his grasp. The red card triggered sleepless nights and strong emotional upset for Pope.
