Man arrested after racially abusive messages sent to England star Jess Carter

A 59-year-old man from Great Harwood, Lancashire was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications and released under investigation after racist and abusive messages were sent to England defender Jess Carter during UEFA Women's Euro 2025. The UK Football Policing Unit collaborated with social media companies to identify who was responsible, and Lancashire Police conducted the arrest in relation to some of the messages. Cheshire Constabulary’s chief constable condemned the abuse, vowed that racist abuse will not be tolerated and said offenders should not hide behind social media profiles. Jess Carter said she felt scared before the Euro final and thanked fans, team-mates and family for their support.
The messages directed towards Jess Carter were appalling, and I would like to commend her for standing up to this abuse and assisting with our investigation. Nobody should be subjected to such disgusting abuse, and I expect that today's arrest will be the first of many over the coming months. We want to make it clear that racist abuse of this nature will not be tolerated.
