Man arrested over racist abuse sent to Jess Carter
"I would like to commend her for standing up to this abuse and assisting with our investigation,"
"We want to make it clear that racist abuse of this nature will not be tolerated. Everyone is responsible for what they do and say, and we want to ensure offenders cannot hide behind a social media profile to post vile comments."
"Lancashire Police does not tolerate hate of any form, either in person or online."
A 59-year-old man from Great Harwood was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications after racist messages were sent to England defender Jess Carter during the UEFA Women's Euros. Cheshire Police led the investigation with support from Lancashire Police and the UK Football Policing Unit, which worked with social media companies to trace those responsible. Carter said she was stepping back from social media after being targeted. Senior police figures described the abuse as appalling, commended Carter for assisting the inquiry, released bodycam footage of the arrest, and vowed to pursue offenders regardless of how long it takes.
