New Staten Island athletic program bridges gap for special needs youth
Briefly

Staten Island's first integrated athletic league, funded by Councilmember David M. Carr, will launch during the 2025-26 season. The Initiative offers free sports instruction and events to help children with special needs integrate with neurotypical peers. The inaugural program, called the "Sunday Sports Series," will feature free six-week soccer and track programs. The initiative aims to build sport skills, confidence, and teamwork among children from diverse backgrounds. Carr emphasizes the importance of nurturing every child, regardless of their circumstances, through this inclusive athletic platform.
The Integrated Athletic Initiative is a not-for-profit organization offering free sports instruction, teams, events and leagues that bridge the gap between underprivileged, special needs, and mainstream youth and young adults.
The league will launch this upcoming fall for the 2025-26 season, showcasing the inaugural program called the "Sunday Sports Series" with free track and soccer programs.
Carr expressed, "I knew I could partner with the initiative to offer expanded program options for families that have kids on the spectrum as well as neurotypical children."
Programming is free of charge and aims to help facilitate the building of sport skills, confidence, self-esteem, and sportsmanship for all participants.
