Liverpoolâs Darwin Nunez has been ordered to serve the remainder of a five-match ban by Conmebol for confronting Colombian fans after a Copa America match in July 2024. The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal by the Uruguay Football Association seeking to annul or reduce the suspension on grounds of self-defence. Nunez will miss crucial World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, and Peru next month, after having served two matches of the ban previously.
The panel found that in this case the principle of self-defence does not apply. The conduct of the players constituted a voluntary, violent and unjustified action.
Nunez has been ordered to serve the remainder of a ban for his involvement in an altercation with fans while playing for Uruguay.
