Jess Carter, an England defender, announced she will take a break from social media due to significant racial abuse received during Euro 2025. The Lionesses declared the end of kneeling before matches as an anti-racism statement, believing a new approach is needed to combat racism in football. Carter emphasized that while fans can share views on performance, it is unacceptable to target individuals based on race or appearance. The Football Association is collaborating with police to address the hate crimes associated with this abuse.
"From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. While I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and results, I don't agree or think it's OK to target someone's appearance or race."
"The Lionesses also said they would now stop the anti-racism move of taking a knee before matches, saying it was 'clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism'."
"As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with."
"The Football Association said it was 'working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice'."
