South Africa’s sports minister Gayton McKenzie demanded a report after reports said the national football team’s travel to Mexico was delayed due to visa problems. The national broadcaster SABC attributed the delay to an “administrative bungle” that left some players without visas. McKenzie ordered the South African Football Association (Safa) to take action against those responsible and said the situation made the team look foolish. Bafana Bafana were scheduled to play Jamaica in a friendly in Mexico on Friday before facing Mexico in the World Cup opening match on 11 June. Efforts were underway to secure US visas so the squad could travel later on Sunday or Monday for the second World Cup match against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. South Africa’s final home match before the tournament ended 0-0 against Nicaragua, extending a winless run to four games.
