Why can't India produce footballers like it does cricketers? DW 05/13/2025
Briefly

On April 28, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made cricket history as the youngest player to score 100 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the second-fastest to achieve this milestone with only 35 balls. While Indian cricket continues to produce young talents like Suryavanshi, Indian football faces challenges, reflected in the recall of veteran striker Sunil Chhetri from retirement due to a shortage of goal-scoring talent. This disparity underlines the contrasting trajectories of cricket and soccer in India regarding player development and representation.
Sunil was recalled as we have a lack of strikers who can score goals. We have an issue about talent at this moment, with some settling into the system only around the age of 25.
There are no role models in football, they are all outside India. Cricket continues to find young talent at an unprecedented rate, while football lags significantly behind.
