Brooklyn, Queens seniors awarded USTA Althea Gibson HBCU Scholarship

Leila Legrand from Brooklyn and Adria Stacker from Queens were awarded the 2025 USTA Althea Gibson HBCU Scholarship, recognizing their dedication to tennis and academic excellence. Each received $5,000 to aid their college education, with Legrand set to attend Howard University and Stacker continuing at Florida A&M University. The scholarship honors Althea Gibson, the first African American to compete in the U.S. Open, and aligns with USTA's commitment to promoting diversity in sports. The awards were presented during the HBCU Springcoming event in Riverside Park, emphasizing the significance of HBCU traditions.
"These students embody the values of hard work, perseverance, and passion that Althea Gibson exemplified both on and off the court, and we look forward to witnessing their continued success as they pursue their academic and athletic dreams," said Marisa Grimes, USTA's chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officer.
Legrand will attend Howard University and Stacker will continue her education at Florida A&M University, where they will continue their tennis careers.
