Meta is testing a direct messaging feature on its Threads app, allowing users in Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina to send DMs without switching to Instagram. This change addresses a long-standing user request, as previously, sending DMs required toggling between the two platforms, creating an awkward experience. Meta plans to expand this feature to more regions, including the US, in the near future. Direct messaging has been a feature of Threads' roadmap since its launch, indicating a response to user feedback seeking a more cohesive messaging experience.
In order to DM someone you see on the Threads feed, you'd have to send a message to their Instagram account - and then toggle back and forth between Threads and Instagram.
DMs have always been part of Threads' long-term plan. Product imagery of a DM feature was included in an internal deck about the Threads launch.
