In an antitrust case against Meta, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) listed MeWe among competitors to Facebook, sparking curiosity about the platform. Founded in 2016 by privacy advocate Mark Weinstein, MeWe claims over 20 million users and operates without ads or data harvesting. CEO Jeffrey S. Edell criticized Facebook's data practices, asserting that their platform respects user privacy. The FTC's mention of MeWe, alongside other defunct sites, underscores Facebook's long-standing dominance in social networking as the case aims to address monopolistic concerns.
"Unlike Facebook, we do not harvest our customers' data or operate any form of surveillance capitalism," said MeWe's CEO, emphasizing their commitment to user privacy.
The FTC's complaint highlights Facebook's dominance in personal social networking from 2012 to 2020, listing MeWe among scarce competitors.
