Microsoft breaks Windows reset and recovery
Briefly

Microsoft is launching an out-of-band update due to serious malfunctions in Windows reset and recovery functionality stemming from the August 2025 security update. While Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server are not impacted, numerous other versions, particularly the outgoing Windows 10, are affected. Many devices cannot upgrade to Windows 11 because of hardware compatibility issues. Attempts to reset or recover these devices may fail, complicating operations especially for older machines that face risks during handoffs between users.
Microsoft confirmed that attempts to reset or recover the device might fail through 'Reset my PC' or 'Fix problems using Windows Update', affecting many versions.
The issue affecting the August 2025 security update has rendered the 'Reset my PC' function nonoperational, complicating the process of handing down older machines.
