Kurt Kuhlmann spent over 20 years at Bethesda, first as a junior designer in the late 1990s and later as a senior designer from 2003. He contributed to every major Elder Scrolls title except the first and helped build much of the series' setting and lore. Kuhlmann left the company in 2023 after two stints, citing frustrations with Bethesda's growth into hundreds of employees across multiple studios under Microsoft. He identified increased managerial responsibilities, layered bureaucracy, and communication breakdowns that left teams confused and limited the ability of senior developers to remain hands-on with content creation.
