The startup behind open source tool Polars raises $21M from Accel | TechCrunch
"In the open-source community, the joke is that you can rewrite anything in Rust and it becomes better,"
"The reason that it's a joke is that it is not a real sustainable advantage, and you need to do a lot more."
Polars, an Amsterdam-based company, raised €18 million in a Series A round led by Accel with participation from Bain Capital Partners and angel investors. The project began as a pet project during Covid when founder Ritchie Vink built a faster query engine in Rust to address Pandas limitations. Polars gained popularity for high performance and launched Polars Cloud in February as a managed data platform. The company is developing Polars Distributed, currently in public beta, to handle petabyte-scale use cases and to compete with systems like Apache Spark. Most Series A funding will support building the distributed engine.
