AWS released Amazon EC2 R8i and R8i-flex instances powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors exclusive to AWS. The instances target memory-intensive workloads and claim the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth among comparable Intel processors in the cloud. Reported gains versus the prior generation include up to 15% better price performance, 20% higher performance, 2.5× more memory throughput, and a 4.6× larger L3 cache. Intel optimized microarchitecture, firmware, hypervisor, virtualization, and software frameworks to maximize Xeon 6 benefits on AWS infrastructure. R8i scales to 384 vCPUs and 3 TB memory, is SAP certified at 142,100 aSAPS, R8i-flex offers smaller sizes, and both use sixth-generation Nitro Cards with up to 2× network and EBS bandwidth.
AWS recently announced the general availability of its new eighth-generation, memory-optimized Amazon EC2 R8i and R8i-flex instances, which are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available exclusively on AWS. The new EC2 instances are designed for memory-intensive workloads and, according to the company, deliver the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth among comparable Intel processors in the cloud. It states that the instances provide significant improvements over the previous generation, including up to 15% better price performance and 20% higher performance.
R8i instances can scale up to 96xlarge with 384 vCPUs and 3TB of memory, enhancing database application performance. They are SAP certified, delivering 142,100 aSAPS. While the R8i-flex instances provide commonly used sizes from large to 16xlarge for applications with lower compute needs. Both instance types utilize the latest sixth-generation AWS Nitro Cards, offering up to twice the network and Amazon EBS bandwidth of the previous generation.
