Comcast Deploys Ciena Technology to Extend Fiber Impact
""We continue to expand our footprint so we can deliver next generation connectivity to as many communities as possible," said Elad Nafshi, Executive Vice President, Chief Network Officer for Comcast Connectivity and Platforms. "Ciena's coherent routing technology is the newest tool to help us pursue this goal as efficiently as possible. This platform can be useful in supporting our Rural Broadband and BEAD initiatives that are critical to improving digital opportunity across America.""
""Breakthroughs in network technology can redefine what's possible for entire communities," said Kevin Sheehan, CTO of the Americas, VP of Sales Engineering at Ciena. "Working together, Ciena and Comcast have brought this unique solution to market, allowing Comcast to deliver 100 Gb/s over longer distances without the need for expensive hub sites or power-hungry equipment. It can help accelerate broadband deployments and ensures that every community can benefit from fast, reliable connectivity.""
Comcast is deploying Ciena's 5131 Coherent Access Platform (CAP) to extend fiber connectivity faster and more efficiently. The coherent router technology enables extending current fiber deployments over 100 km and delivering 100 Gb/s capacity to residential, SMB, enterprise, and community anchor institutions in unserved or underserved areas. The platform operates in a standardized, line-powered, weatherproof enclosure, reducing installation complexity and operational overhead. The solution surpasses the reach of existing DWDM fiber plant and eliminates the need for expensive hub sites and power-hungry equipment. The deployment can support Rural Broadband and BEAD initiatives to accelerate broadband availability and improve digital opportunity.
