OpenAI has announced its acquisition of io, a hardware startup founded by Jony Ive, renowned as Apple’s former design chief. The deal is estimated to be valued at nearly $6.5 billion. In a joint statement, Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that both companies share a commitment of pooling the best talents from diverse fields, including engineering, science, and manufacturing. The merger aims to create products that inspire and empower consumers more efficiently by integrating io’s innovative hardware capabilities into OpenAI’s research and product teams.
"We gathered together the best hardware and software engineers, the best technologists, physicists, scientists, researchers and experts in product development and manufacturing," Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said.
"The io team, focused on developing products that inspire, empower and enable, will now merge with OpenAI to work more intimately with the research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco."
