Pentagon may break up tech offices in acquisition-policy shift
Briefly

The Pentagon is contemplating a significant shift in its acquisition strategy by merging various innovation offices into a new body aimed at procuring cutting-edge military technologies. This new organization, described as a commercial-engineering version of DARPA, could include elements from the Strategic Capabilities Office and the Defense Innovation Unit. The shift reflects a focus on practical applications, such as weapon systems, rather than abstract technologies, prioritizing immediate utility to warfighters. The plan is still in early discussions and would require formal approval from the defense secretary and lawmakers.
"We are going to create an organization that is the commercial-engineering version of DARPA," using portions of the Strategic Capabilities Office, the Defense Innovation Unit, and the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, the official said on condition of anonymity.
"This [Trump] administration cares about weapon systems and business systems and not 'technologies.' We're not going to be investing in 'artificial intelligence' because I don't know what that means. We're going to invest in autonomous killer robots."
