Heated Rivalry's costume designer explains 'queer coded' costumes
"I didn't lean much into fashion really in this show. I tried to keep it really grounded, but still aspirational."
"It's a little bit queer coded in some ways that's hidden."
"In Slavic culture, I don't think that's something they're trying to do. But for us it reads that way."
"I don't know that we always get to choose what becomes iconic."
Heated Rivalry debuted in late November and quickly became a hit, led by Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams in an adaptation of Rachel Reid's Game Changers. Costume designer Hanna Puley kept wardrobes grounded yet aspirational to reflect character identity, especially for Ilya Rozanov, who mostly wears subdued clothes but occasionally chooses bright patterns like a Hawaiian shirt. Puley noted some styling reads as queer-coded within Slavic cultural context. A comfortable fleece jacket worn by Shane Hollander’s Team Canada character unexpectedly went viral and inspired recreations and a petition for official merchandise. The show has been renewed for season two.
