It was overwhelming': Katie Leung on Harry Potter, sudden fame, insecurity and starring in Bridgerton
"I look young for my age as most people in the west think Asians do but I felt really seen to finally get to play the role of a mother. She is a mother, she points out, and anyway, the role of Lady Araminta Gun, the steely aristo who is about to rock the new series of Netflix's Regency behemoth Bridgerton,"
"The showrunners reassured me that it wasn't going to be the archetypal evil stepmother role, says Leung. They wanted to find the humanity in Araminta. They wanted to ensure I knew her background, her struggles, why she makes these decisions, and why she's so formidable. She is, though, from the four episodes I've seen, pretty evil to Sophie. Leung agrees. The thing about her, and with so many of the characters in Bridgerton, is they do these awful things, they make mistakes, they're human."
Katie Leung plays Lady Araminta Gun, a widowed aristocrat in Bridgerton intent on marrying off her two teenage daughters while keeping stepdaughter Sophie in a subordinate, Cinderella-style role. Showrunners framed Araminta as a complex figure whose background, struggles, and motivations explain her formidable behavior rather than an archetypal evil stepmother. Araminta commits harsh acts toward Sophie driven by love and protection for her daughters. Leung's own experience of motherhood has deepened her empathy for the role. Leung has prior experience on large productions, including playing Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films, and feels fortunate to join the Bridgerton cast.
