June Lockhart, Beloved On-Screen Mother, Dead at 100
"Mommy always considered acting as her craft, her vocation, but her true passions were journalism, politics, science and NASA,"
"She cherished playing her role in Lost in Space and she was delighted to know that she inspired many future astronauts, as they would remind her on visits to NASA. That meant even more to her than the hundreds of television and movie roles she played."
"I love rock 'n' roll and going to the concerts. I have driven Army tanks and flown in hot air balloons,"
"And I go plane-gliding - the ones with no motors. I do a lot of things that don't go with my image."
June Lockhart died October 23 in California at age 100. Her Hollywood career began in 1938 when she starred with her parents Gene and Kathleen Lockhart as the Cratchit family in The Christmas Carol. She had a small role in Son of Lassie and took over the Martin matriarch role on Lassie in 1958 on CBS, her first series regular part. She later played Maureen Robinson in Lost in Space, a mother of three stranded on an alien planet. Her passions included journalism, politics, science and NASA, and she delighted in inspiring future astronauts. She enjoyed rock 'n' roll concerts, driving tanks, hot air balloons and plane-gliding.
