RuPaul's Drag Race released an AI-animated special titled "Jinkx & Plasma's Gay Adventure!" on July 1, featuring characters voiced by Jinkx Monsoon and Plasma. Although the animation began with a hand-drawn appearance, it soon switched to AI-generated images. The special was removed from YouTube, leading to widespread criticism on social media. Fans expressed disappointment, questioning the decision to use AI instead of hiring artists, emphasizing the importance of creativity from queer artists in the show's identity. Clips of the special circulated online alongside community backlash.
The RPDR channel just uploaded a AI animated special, and I just don't get why they didn't just hire an artist to do the whole thing... it looks soulless.
Drag Race is a show thriving off the creativity of queer artists both on screen and behind the scenes. Instead of using artists we were given AI slop that looks like awful. Y'all do better please.
