Advocates gather at city council to discuss solutions for Toronto's homelessness crisis | CBC News
Briefly

Toronto's homeless population has surged, with an estimated 15,400 individuals without shelter according to a recent survey. City councillors have approved plans to investigate operating micro shelters in underutilized Toronto Transit Commission parking lots, as many are under half full during peak hours. The initiative, supported by Councillor Chris Moise, aims to provide temporary accommodation for the unhoused, who currently face challenges including camping in parks. Micro-shelters offer a transitional solution while long-term housing options are developed, with some being designed by advocacy groups for communal living.
Micro-shelters range in style from cabin communities to tiny homes and tents, all designed for temporarily sheltering people while more long-term solutions are sought.
According to the highlights of the 2024 Street Needs Assessment survey, Toronto's unhoused population reached an estimated 15,400 last fall, up from 7,000 in 2021.
