The Toronto Fringe Festival faced significant challenges over the past five years, including a complete cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic. From 2021 onwards, the festival transitioned to digital formats and experienced low audience numbers when returning to in-person shows, temporarily losing funding and reducing show presentations. However, the festival has rebounded in 2023, expanding to 100 shows and generating over $500,000 in box office revenue directly benefiting artists. The festival's success this year is attributed to collaborative efforts with local theater companies and enhanced genre offerings.
This year, the Toronto Fringe Festival has expanded back to 100 shows, with steady audience numbers. It has surpassed $500,000 at the box office, all of which goes back to the artists.
‘Fringe has now placed things in a way that feels really good for us,’ said executive director Rachel Kennedy. ‘We’re seeing the numbers corroborate that it’s definitely an upward trajectory.’
