"Angel Bastardo and Spencer Miles are heading into the spring looking for big league jobs. Both players were acquired by the Jays via the Rule 5 Draft - Bastardo in 2024, Miles in 2025 - and they will both need to spend time on the big league roster this next campaign if the Jays want to keep them around past next year."
"Bastardo spent all of last season on the 60-day IL while recovering from Tommy John surgery and didn't pitch in any affiliated baseball last season. This wasn't a secret for the Jays brass; they knew that the Venezuelan right-hander would be on the sidelines for the majority, if not all of last season, when they selected him in the draft."
The Toronto Blue Jays will enter the 2026 season with bullpen roster spots open and two Rule 5 Draft acquisitions competing for jobs. Angel Bastardo (selected 2024) and Spencer Miles (selected 2025) must spend time on the major-league roster under Rule 5 requirements for the Jays to retain them. Bastardo missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery while on the 60-day IL and did not pitch in affiliated baseball. Because he was selected before the missed season, Bastardo needs 90 active days on the roster before he can be optioned; otherwise he must be offered back to the Boston Red Sox. Miles must remain on the Blue Jays' active roster for the entire season under the normal Rule 5 trajectory or be offered back to the San Francisco Giants. The Jays previously used a similar approach with Elvis Luciano in 2019.
