Boy in care of Burlington, Ont., couple 'would be alive' if taken to hospital as urged, psychiatrist testifies | CBC News
"The psychiatrist for a 12-year-old boy who was in the care of two Burlington, Ont., women has testified she urged the couple to take him to the emergency room multiple times before his death in 2022, but they refused. The boy's health was worsening and he wasn't eating, Dr. Shelinderjit Dhaliwal told the weeks-long murder trial for Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber in Milton."
"Cooney and Hamber are charged with, and have pleaded not guilty to, first-degree murder of the boy they were trying to adopt. He is referred to as L.L. in court as his identity is under a publication ban to protect the name of his younger brother, known as J.L. L.L. is seen here while in an in-patient mental health program in 2019 when he was eight years old. CBC has blurred his face to protect his identity, which is under a publication ban."
A psychiatrist said she repeatedly urged the caregivers of a 12-year-old boy to take him to the emergency department before his 2022 death, but the caregivers declined. The boy's health had been worsening and he was not eating. Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber face first-degree murder charges and have pleaded not guilty. The women also face charges including confinement, assault with a weapon (zip ties) and failing to provide the necessaries of life to the boy's younger brother. The Indigenous boys were wards of the Children's Aid Society of Ottawa and were relocated to Burlington in 2017 while the women sought to adopt them. A judge-only Superior Court trial in Milton is ongoing and expected to continue into December.
