"Construction on the Gardiner Expressway is expected to be finished by the end of the month, over a year ahead of the original schedule, the Ministry of Transportation has told CBC News. It could be completed as early as Oct. 27, ministry spokesperson Dakota Brasier said Friday. The new expected completion date comes after the province spent $73 million this year to speed up the project, including allowing work around the clock."
"We are at the last stage of the construction of the Gardiner. Yes, we have reduced the construction time from three years to a year and a half. But there is the final stage of construction, so it will soon be done, she said. The fact that we're delivering this in half the time ... it really makes a difference to ease congestion. It's not just a small construction project, not a repair, but a rebuild of the Gardiner."
Construction on the Gardiner Expressway began in March 2024 and targets completion by the end of October, potentially Oct. 27, after accelerated work and $73 million in provincial spending. Work was allowed around the clock to shorten the schedule, cutting the timeline from an initial April 2027 finish to roughly 18 months. The project is in its final construction stage and aims to rebuild the 60‑year‑old elevated highway to ease congestion. In July 2024 the city transferred responsibility for the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway to the province to reduce multi‑billion operation and maintenance costs. Upcoming work includes repairs on five bridges.
