An unsigned painting by Tom Thomson, originally gifted to his friend Charlie Scrim, has been returned to its owner Joseph Murray after going missing for four years. Entrusted to Waddington's Auction House in 2015, the painting's authenticity was confirmed through analysis at the Canadian Conservation Institute and by expert Dennis Reid. After being told it was lost, Murray hired private investigators to trace the painting. It was finally located and returned, highlighting its significance within Canadian art history and the challenges of art authentication and ownership.
Murray was informed in 2021 that the auction house did not have the painting, and he faced confusion amidst assurances it was in storage or awaiting auction.
The painting's authenticity was confirmed by the late Thomson expert Dennis Reid, further cementing its value as a significant part of Canadian art history.
