A new medical school in Brampton will welcome its first class, with students beginning their studies on Tuesday. The school is the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in over one hundred years and aims to address a shortage of family doctors amid rapid population growth driven by newcomers and young families. Students described acceptance as surreal and expressed a desire to support people who may not yet understand the system or feel they belong. The program does not require the MCAT, offers 94 undergraduate seats for nearly 6,500 applicants, and has an acceptance rate around 1.5 percent. University leadership called the intake extremely competitive and assured that learning resources will be accessible despite ongoing finishing work on the building.
When Jovana Vucekvic found out she was accepted into the very first class of Toronto Metropolitan University's (TMU) medical school, she drove straight to the Brampton campus as the news sunk in. "The feeling was truly surreal," she said. But the real work begins on Tuesday, when she'll return to the building with her classmates for their very first day of school.
The medical school in Brampton is the first to open in the GTA in over one hundred years and was designed to help address the shortage of family doctors in the area as its population booms with newcomers and young families. "I really want to give back to those people who might not feel like they understand the system yet. They might not feel Canadian enough. They might not feel like they belong," Vucekvic told CBC's Metro Morning on Monday.
